Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) found fame as the author of novels like Far from the Madding Crowd, The Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. Then he turned to poetry and concentrated on that for the rest of his life. He said that his aim was "to record in the rhythm and music of verse impressions of what he saw and remembered about nature and human nature."
